Welcome to the high post series, brought to you by Pro Training Basketball. The goal of this playlist is to introduce you to the basics of the high post and give you a few essential moves to become a better high post player.
The first step into become a better high post player is understanding how to get position. Similar to our low post series, the first lesson is on how to get position. There will be four steps that you should follow. Please understand that this is an intro level that we hope all players can adapt and because of this there will be scenarios we will not be able to address here today.
If you want to take this playlist to the next level check out our Power Forward workout, which is designed to help players develop their skills to become more elite mid and high post players.
Step 1 – Make a Good Cut
This is important as a player because it allows you to create separation from the person guarding you. Against man to man or zone defenses, it is a good idea to flash to the high post if the defender loses sight of where you are.
Step 2 – Know Your Surroundings
This is a hard skill to teach and comes with playing a lot of basketball. Before and during your cut, you want to paying attention and have court awareness to know your surroundings. The better you get at this the more decisive your decisions will be ad the better choices you will make.
Step 3 – Step to The Ball
This is the easiest step, but often forgot by many post players. It is tempting to wait for the ball to come to you. The problem with this is other players will move to the pass an deflect and/ or steal the pass. This simple step will prevent turnovers and increase your chances of scoring
Step 4 – Reverse Pivot
Once you have secured the pass, it is time to get ready to make a move. For the less experience players want you using a reverse pivot here, so you can see what is going on in front of you. More experience players that have the court awareness to know ahead of time you can use either type of pivot.
Now that we have secured the ball and faced the basket let check out the first move you should knows in the high post.
